About Cabela’s Cabela’s is a sporting goods chain that specializes in outdoor recreation gear. Richard N. Cabela founded Cabela’s in 1961 as a mail order store that allowed shoppers to buy fishing supplies. He bought fishing flies in Chicago and advertised the gear for sale in the local paper.
